What’s In It For Me? Designers Evaluate The Real Value Of Professional Development Conferences.

The constant stream of work demands, emails and more keep us tied to our desks. But many experts agree that while a small amount of success comes from output, a bigger portion is from creating and leveraging your network and upon successful delivery of your brand to your customers and stakeholders. One change-making tool successful pros use is the professional development conference. Professional conferences go a long way towards pulling you from that day-to-day grind to evaluate your next smart moves. They give you the space to take in how your business is changing, to build your network and to make sure you are on track for success.

According to Julia Molloy, founder of the BOLD Summit, We can all feel it. The design industry is evolving quickly. In fact, within 3 years, the landscape will be quite different than it is today. Adapt or die is the name of the game in an industry disruption event and it has happened many times before.

We asked designers to weigh-in on the benefits of attending design conferences such as the upcoming BOLD Summit in Chicago (September 25-27). Are events worth the expense, the time out of the office and what do they deliver in real, measurable ROI value?

  • Tell us why attending professional conferences is important to you?

Anne Hepfer – Anne Hepfer Designs, Inc.

I attended the 2015 BOLD Summit in Palm Springs and I gained an incredible amount of ‘take-home’ value to apply to my business. Meeting and having the opportunity to sit at a round table with the honored Masters was an incredible experience.”   — Anne Hepfer

  • How has this helped your business? Do you have a specific example or case study to share?

Danny Russo, ASSOCIATE ASID – SRG // INTERIORS inc.

Before attending the BOLD summit I always questioned some of the things that were happening to me with my clients. Was I the only person these things were happening to? The answer was NO, the same issues that were plaguing my firm, were happening to many others in the industry. It gave me a network of many connections and friendships that I cherish very much.”   — Danny Russo

  • What is one game changing thing you learned at a summit or conference?

Angela Todd – Angela Todd Studios

One speaker took a few designers on stage and found out what most of their client’s had in common with a series of rapid-fire questions. Then she suggested that all of us figure out what our client’s had in common – and suggested we market to that ONE person. This made my marketing so much more powerful and even fun this last year.”   — Angela Todd

  • Why would you recommend the BOLD Summit?

Corinne Brown – Brown Design Group

You don’t know what you don’t know… until you go. There’s a bigger world out there. You kind of wonder about this – but you have to expose yourself, have people to bounce off of and network. There’s so much out there to learn and absorb. You can’t do it unless you go to an event like BOLD Summit.”   — Corinne Brown

Day two kicks off with the third of our BOLD Masters, the inimitable Martyn Lawrence-Bullard. Beyond the notoriety of his design firm, Martyn is also known for his fabulous line of products including furniture, fabric, flooring, fragrances, and soon to be fashion and jewelry. Next we dive into a products and licensing panel moderated by Natalie Norcross, founder of A Design Partnership. This panel features Crans Baldwin, who will be giving a presentation later in the day on how to navigate and adapt your business to your strategic advantage. Crans will share with us his insights into the marketplace as it is today, and offer options and solutions for designers seeking to grow, adapt, and differentiate their businesses in today’s challenging business climate.

Our Keynote Speaker Keith Granet will then present on licensing contracts and important strategic aspects of brand extension. He will help you to understand what milestones need to be met before launching a furniture line or licensing deal. Keith will also introduce a groundbreaking new tool that creates efficiency in your design process. This will be followed by BOLD Summit Founder Julia Molloy’s presentation on company structure and workflow.

Following lunch, we will hear from Crans Baldwin and Randy Fiser, chief executive officer of ASID. Dedicated to advancing community and economic development, he brings to his role a unique point of view about the capacity of design to make a positive impact on human health, well-being, and productivity. Randy is releasing new information on evidence based design that you can consider incorporating into your business offering.

Our final panel for the Summit will be on blogging, technology, and social media and how to make them work for you. Featured on this panel will be Anna Brockway, the chief curator from Chairish, and Mat Sanders from MyDomaine. Afterwards, you can join some free-form roundtable discussions with the experts featured over the two days of the Summit. Lastly, we will be treated to a summation by Chris Ramey, president of Affluent Insights and one of the most highly regarded experts in the luxury segment.

BOLD Summit Day 1: External Alignment for Growth

Wondering just what it is you’ll be learning at the BOLD Summit this year? Look no further! Here is a rundown of some of the topics we’ll be covering during the most intense two days of business development you’ve ever seen. Your time is valuable so it has to be high impact!

After an introduction by Julia Molloy, the owner of the BOLD Summit, we’ll start the day with our first BOLD Master, Kelly Hoppen MBE. In a Q&A session with Julia, Kelly will tell us all about the keys to her success and how she grew her business into an international powerhouse.

Next on the list is the founder of the Business of Design Summit, David Shepherd with his hands-on Action Map workshop. David has developed a process that helps the small business owner to clarify goals, focus strategy, and then identify the few critical learning and growth objectives that will effectively achieve those goals. It is progress on the learning and growth objectives that need to be measured, not accounting data. (Yes, he’ll be declaring “the end of accounting!”)

Kim Kuhteubl’s presentation “Tiny Tribe, Big Influence” is going to walk you through the process of identifying your most authentic message and develop a strategy for visibility and branding that will attract more of your ideal clients, make your brand more attractive to the media and align with the lifestyle you are striving for.

After lunch, sit down with our second BOLD Master, Joan Behnke, called “The Billionaire Whisperer” by Forbes magazine. Joan will share the decisions and techniques that have helped her build her business. Later in the day you’ll be able to join her for an intimate roundtable discussion — but sign up now, because Joan’s group is filling up fast!

Following this Q&A session, we will be presenting two panels that will provide all the information you need to get your work published. The first, “Think Like an Editor”, will be moderated by PR professional Barbara Pressman and feature editors from several prestigious interior design magazines. Afterwards, join renowned photographers Laura Hull and Victoria Pearson for “Photos and Points of View” where they will discuss exactly how photographing your work affects your likelihood of being published.

After a snack and sponsor showcase, we’ll head into our first roundtable sessions and portfolio reviews with the aforementioned editors. We’ll end the day with the presentation of our BOLD Masters awards. If you haven’t already signed up for our exclusive BOLD Masters Dinner at the Piazza de Liberace, now is the time to do it! There are only six slots left for this amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

YOU ARE MEANT FOR GREAT THINGS

This week I have been reminded over and over again how important it is for us to keep on striving for what we want. Stretching toward our growth edge.  Before you can blast through that barrier, before you overcome the challenge and step up your game, you MUST know your “WHY”.  Why do you reach so hard. Why do you want it?

Know that you can. In fact, if you feel this drive and your inner knowing tells you there is something more for you, don’t you dare stop! You know there is greatness in you. I see the greatness in you. Learn what you need to learn, make the connections you need to make, put the pieces together. Create your life fervently! Stretch, bloom, reach, run!

What were you put on this earth to do?  What are you built for? What screams on the inside trying to burst free?  What is your GIFT!?  You have a gift and it is so important! It is your great honor and responsibility, should you choose to accept the challenge, to do whatever it TAKES to manifest your greatest desires.  Your passion is your calling in this world. Do NOT take this lightly!

I see you as so precious. I’m not sure you understand. I don’t know if you see what I see.  You literally are a link in the chain of the transformation our world is waking up to.  Your role as a designer is pivotal to creating a beautiful and amazing future our grandchildren will enjoy. YOU change the world; one soul at a time, one space, one family, one community at a time.  The extent that you can use your gift, is the extent to which you become more of who you are.  This is how you bloom! Using your gift is how you bloom. Creating a thriving design firm is how you bloom. Creating masterpieces on a regular basis is HOW you open up to the world and radiate your light! You can do this. You were born to do this.

I have been given a gift as well. A purpose in this world that runs through my very being. It is my burden and my bliss. It is always my great honor.

My gift is to nourish you… so that YOU can change to world.

That is MY “Why”.

Let’s DO this.

I’m loving the recent popularization of this beautiful soft gray color in interior design. It feels both fresh and soothing; such a lovely and versatile neutral that works in any room of a house! This project titled “Gorgeous in Gray” by Kerrie Kelly of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab in Sacramento, California caught my eye and truly epitomizes the versatility of this color. As Kerrie has so masterfully demonstrated, soft gray is also an ideal choice for the exterior of a home. These images make me want to go home and paint something gray. Well done, Kerrie!
